Bradford City Stadium Fire - 35 years ago today
11th May 1985
56 dead & over 250 injured when the stand went up and was destroyed in 4 mins
Last day of the season and they were celebrating promotion.
Old wooden stand built on a hill and rubbish had built up underneath it for years without it being cleared.

Yeah there are two in particular on You Tube. One with Gabby Yorath and her dad was manager that day and another half hour one was about how warnings weren't heeded.

This was horrific...Architecturally, Bradford was a really attractive city but the landed gentry allowed it to go to seed...this was kinda seen as the culmination of that process.

The King's Cross Fire happened on my birthday 2 years later...they lived next door to St.Pancras on Ossulton Street and invited me around to celebrate together. We could smell the stench of burning flesh in the air.

Again, Horrific beyond belief.

Is there a TV documentary about this did someone mention?

Absolutely horrendous. The footage on You Tube reminds us that the police officers in that stand were brave people.

Then 14 months later Leeds fans rioted at Bradford and set fire to a chip van that was on the away terrace,

Apparently Police know what happened.
Bloke admitted to trying to stub out a dropped cigarette.

He's emigrated to Australia now.

He was actually holidaying in the UK having emigrated to Australia and is now dead.

Yes he did.

But Police are satisfied it was an accident.

Yeah, didn't the owner have a bit of previous for businesses of his going up in flames?

But there were insurance job conspiracy theories going around.

I once worked with John Helm and I had long forgotten he was the commentator at Valley Parade on that awful day. For some reason the fire came up in conversation which is when he told me he was commentating at the time. Suddenly I remembered his voice. Not sure if he was from Bradford himself but he told me he knew plenty of people at the game and although he just wanted to put the mic down knew he had to be professional and carry on commentating.

Needless to say he says it was the most harrowing thing he ever saw and he even told me the name of the "human torch" as he was known but I can't recall it.

A few posts below me and Alfs remember live coverage and as the camera went on the stands there was someone standing towards the middle of the stand, not moving, completly engulfed by flames like some 'superhero' and you could tell they were dead there and then, no dying in hospital later.
Never seen that footage shown ever again for obvious reasons. Will Never forget that.

I remember watching grandstand or world of sport as it happened. It was pretty horrific.

"The Poor Man".

A 70 year old that appeared from the stands head to foot in flames. Died later that night in hospital i believe.

RIP to all - such a tragic event.

Same day Birminghan and Leeds had a massive ruck.
Wall collapsed and 15 year old kid died.

Not a good day for football. Game changer all around in so many respects.

People were retreating but the heat got so intense people's clothes started to smoulder and catch fire near the stand so these people were being dragged away as well.

Vexed I agree
The times have changed, imagine a director now cutting mid afternoon to a stadium ablaze and broadcasting live and graphic footage as fans are patently burning to death
Vile images and for us something to which we could relate directly as supporters

The footage of this is one of the worst things I've ever seen. Its even worse when you read about the people trying to get out of the exit that had been locked . Dreadful.

The bloke who ran on to the pitch died after I think. I bit young to remember this at the time but it takes hold of the stand so quickly it is hard to believe. Amazing that people never realised that smoking in wooden stands could represent a risk. ditto the underground and the Kings Cross fire - started in a similar way.
